Ioannis Iakovou, MD, PhD was born in Thessaloniki, Greece and his training includes: residency in Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center in Athens, Greece; Research Fellowship in Cardiovascular Research Foundation and Lenox Hill Heart and Vascular Institute (Director: M.B Leon), New York, USA; and Interventional Cardiology Fellowship in Centro Cuore Columbus (Director: A. Colombo), Milan, Italy. He is the author of approximately 95 scientific papers in peer review journals and author or co-author of 15 book chapters in the field of Interventional Cardiology. He was the Distinguished Runner up in the Thomas Linnenmeier Young Investigator Award in TCT 2005, Washington, DC, USA. Percutaneous treatment of bifurcation and left main lesions, chronic total occlusions, thrombotic events and optimal antiplatelet therapy after coronary interventions, intracoronary imaging, left atrial appendage occlusion, and percutaneous treatment of structural heart disease (transcatheter aortic valve replacement, paravalvular leak and fistulae closure, percutaneous mitral valve repair and replacement) are his main areas of interest. In 2014 he was included in the list of the most influential Greek Biomedical Scientists. He also serves in the advisory board of various journals in the field of Interventional Cardiology and he serves as faculty in Interventional Cardiology meetings (TCT 2003- 2018, ICI 2006-2018 among others). He is a member of the European Bifurcation Club and the EAPCI. He is currently working as Associate Director in Interventional Cardiology Department at the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center, Athens, Greece.
